One obvious one is to kill the player every time they make a choice we don t want them to. But that s a poor solution and not very fun for the player. Another way to do it is to write the branches so that they meet every now and then. Say Flynn had stayed on the merchant ship and gone to a different port than the pirate town. He still has to gain information to find the Pirate King. So we let him find it in this other location and then send him to the entrance of the cave. Now we have a point where the branching stories have come back together and that makes it a lot more manageable to write the different versions of the story. Instead of a tree structure that branches outward forever, we now have something like the structure shown in Figure 8 4.

When the players are asked to make a choice, they will often start to worry whether they made the right choice and whether they missed something fantastic by taking the right-hand path. If they start feeling worried, then the spell is broken and they are not as immersed in the game as they could be, because now they are wondering what happens in the other version instead of paying attention to the story they do have. Some game designers think this is fine because it entices people to play the game again to see what they missed, but we don t think that is a good excuse to break the player s immersion in the game. A way to deal with this is to make it clear to the player what they missed. Show them that if they stay in the inn, the pirate ship will take off without them or that because they didn t sleep at the inn, they didn t get caught in the fire.

In some cases, however, most often seen in role-playing games (RPGs), this missing out is a main feature of the game. If you chose to play a dwarf, for instance, you might not get the choice of becoming a mage, but would gain extra stamina that would be great for a warrior. In this case, the challenge is to balance the choices so there is no right or wrong, only preference. The choices should be real dilemmas and not have an obvious right version. If you make a choice that loses you a weapon, then some advantage should be gained. It is hard to get right and often the game designer can t help but hint at the choice they think is the best.

Tip To add the additional constructor, you could have simply edited the class that was generated by the LINQ to SQL template, which is in the AdventureWorkds.designer.cs file. However, you should not do that because the file can be regenerated if you make any table changes, and your constructor would be deleted. This is exactly the purpose of partial classes. They allow you to add a method to an existing class while keeping your extensions in a separate file.
