A web service is a piece of functionality that is exposed through a web interface using standard Internet protocols such as HTTP. The messages exchanged by the client and the server are encoded using an XML-based protocol named Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), or using Representational State Transfer (REST), and are sent to the server over the HTTP protocol. REST uses carefully crafted URLs with specific name-value pairs to call specific methods on the servers. REST is considered to be the easiest way to communicate with the web services that expose this interface. When using REST to access a web service, you simply make an HTTP GET request, and you ll receive the response in XML format. SOAP is an XML-based standard for encoding the information transferred in a web service request or response. SOAP is fostered by a number of organizations, including powerful companies such as Microsoft, IBM, and Sun. The beauty of using web services is that the client and the server can use any technology, any language, and any platform. As long as they exchange information with a standard protocol such as SOAP over HTTP, there is no problem if the client is a cell phone and the server is a Java application running on Solaris, for example. The possibilities are exciting, and we recommend you purchase a book that specializes in web services to discover more about their world. In this chapter, you ll learn how to integrate Amazon Web Services (AWS) to interact with Amazon and sell Amazon.com products through your BalloonShop web site. You already have an e-commerce web site that sells balloons to its customers. You can go further and make some more money from their passion for balloons by incorporating related gifts from Amazon.com into your site. Do you do this for free Oh no, you ll display Amazon.com s details on your site, but the final checkout will be processed by Amazon.com, and Amazon.com will deliver, in your bank account, a small commission for purchases made from your web site. Sounds like easy money, doesn t it In this chapter, you ll learn how to use AWS to add a special department called Amazon Balloons to your web store, which you can see in Figure 22-1. This will be a special department in that it will be handled differently than the others for example, payment is handled directly by Amazon when the visitor wants to buy a product. This chapter explores just a small subset of AWS s full power, so if you really want to make a fortune out of this service, you should dig deeper to find more substance.

This name is generated by Visual C# Express, just as it generated a default name for the button. You can change the default names (through each control s Properties window), but we ve left the default for this example. Adding an action to an event is very simple when following the instructions shown in Figure 1-7. The simplicity is due to Visual C# Express, and not because the event or action is simple. Visual C# Express makes the assumption that when you double-click a control, you want to modify the default event of the control, and as such, automatically generates the code in step 3 of Figure 1-7. In the case of a button, the default event is the click event; that is, the event that corresponds to a user clicking the button. The assumption of the click event being the default event for a button is logical. Other controls have different default events. For example, double-clicking a TextBox control will generate the code for the text-changed event. Run the application by pressing Ctrl+F5, and then click the button. The text box fills with the text hello, world. Congratulations, you ve just finished your first C# application! You have associated an event with an action: the button click with the text display. Associating events with actions is the basis of all Windows applications.
